Bacteriostatic water is sterile water containing approximately 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a preservative, which inhibits microbial growth after the container has been entered. Sterile water contains no preservative. Laboratory handling guidance notes that benzyl alcohol is a mild denaturant, so it is not automatically the better diluent for particularly sensitive peptides.
