Oxytocin is a nine-amino-acid cyclic peptide hormone and the first peptide hormone ever chemically synthesized, in 1953. Its classical physiology in uterine contraction and milk ejection is firmly established. Research on its social-behavior effects in humans is a different matter: studies have been broadly underpowered, and many findings have failed to replicate.
